Legends of the West

Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, Judge Roy Bean and Pat Garrett. Our Legends of the West Harley-Davidson motorcycle tour will take in the stunning scenery of the American southwest and the places and people that stories and movies are made of. Saguaro cactus and the high deserts beckon us to explore these amazing places where the legends were born. We’ll ride through the mountains and plains, small towns and cities dotting the sparsely populated expanses of the west, great rides and scenery will be there for us to explore. We’ll visit Tonto National Monument, Historic Fort Apache and Fort Davis (home of the buffalo soldiers), and the nefarious Judge Roy Bean’s courthouse and saloon. We’ll be sure to remember The Alamo, ride through the dramatic scenery of Guadalupe Mountains, Big Bend National park, Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands National Monument and missile range (where the first open-air test of the Atomic bomb took place). Iconic stops along the way will include the historic mining districts of Bisbee and Tombstone Arizona, plus the Very Large Array radio telescope. Lots to see and do, we’re sure to have an unforgettable tour.

We ride through Gila National Forest on our way to see the Very Large Array radio telescope, part of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, responsible for some of the most important astronomical discoveries of our time. Comprised of 27 massive 25 metre radio dishes on huge double railroad tracks, it peers into the infinity of space, listening for the mysteries of deep space, and is part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project. After a few photos and a look around it’s into the Rio Grande valley and the Bosque del Apache National wildlife refuge. Then to our hotel in Socorro, home of the New Mexico School of Mining and Technology. Tonight, it’s time for some real Mexican food and margaritas!

Here we visit the Billy the Kid museum and take time to learn all about this legendary man, his adventures as a ranch hand and eventual decent into one of the most recognizable and controversial outlaws of the old west. Finally we ride to Clovis, home of Cannon Air Force Base. Keep your eyes on the sky for aircraft from the Special Operations Command, including the massive AC-130 “spooky” gunships, Predator and Reaper drones, various assault helicopters and the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. We’ll do our best to stay off their radar!

Day 5 Clovis - San Angelo - 285 miles, 5 hrs

We leave New Mexico behind this morning and enter the Lone Star state, Texas! This morning it’s into oil and cattle country, with open ranches and farmland dotted with the occasional oil well. Today is a long day, but a fun one with some great countryside and real rural America. We’ll end our ride in San Angelo, heart of Texas expansive ranching industry.Tonight it’s time for a Texas-sized steak with all the trimmings!

Twisting and turning our way through we soon stop for the slow-smoked aroma and taste of a barbecue lunch, Texas-style. Then it’s onward to our destination, San Antonio and its world famous Riverwalk, with restaurants, shopping and nightlife. It’s a great place for our day off tomorrow. Tonight we can indulge in the Tex-Mex specialty Fajitas, accompanied with a few good Mexican beers or Margaritas.

Day 7 Free Day San Antonio and the Alamo Your choice
Day 7 Free Day San Antonio and the Alamo

We have the whole day today to enjoy the San Antonio Riverwalk, with its galleries, shops and restaurants. Be sure to take the time to head over to the legendary Alamo, enjoy the free tour and learn the whole story of the Texan war of independence from Mexico. Find out about the heroic men and women who fought against impossible odds and perished in their ill-fated attempt to hold the Alamo from capture by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s overwhelming army. This was the final place where William B. Travis, David “Davy” Crockett and James Bowie stood for Texan independence, alongside many others. Then spend the evening checking out the Riverwalk and all its famous restaurants and nightlife.

Day 8 San Antonio - Alpine - 360 miles, 6 hrs

Time to get back to riding, today we head west towards the border area of Texas and along the Rio Grande River. Now it’s back into desert country with Choyo cactus, sagebrush and Mesquite trees. We stop in Langtry for a look around the courthouse saloon of the nefarious Judge Roy Bean, the “Only law west of the Pecos”. After taking it all in, we get onto some of the fastest roads in the USA, following the old Butterfield stage route to our overnight stop.

Day 9 Alpine - Fort Davis - 240 miles, 5 hrs
Day 9 Alpine - Fort Davis

We start the day with a ride to one of the least visited, but stunningly beautiful National Parks, Big Bend. Towering peaks and awe-inspiring vistas make for a beautiful day’s riding, and well worth the detour. Then onward to the small town of Fort Davis, locale of the Historic U.S. Calvary station of the same name and the African-American regiment, commonly referred to as the “Buffalo soldiers”. We’ll have a bit of time to take in the sights before getting dinner and a good night’s rest.

Day 11 Carlsbad - Mesilla

Back in New Mexico, we ride through more ranch land and farms and into the cool pines of the southernmost Rocky Mountains. We’ll stop for lunch in the small town of Cloudcroft before descending back into the desert. Our next stop is at White Sands National Monument, where the first open-air test of the atomic bomb was done in 1944. Here we’ll see the crystal-white gypsum sand dunes, standing in stark contrast to the surrounding desert. Then it’s over the Organ pipe mountain range and into Las Cruces. Tonight we head over to Old Mesilla, once the territorial capitol of Arizona, where Sheriff Pat Garett brought Billy the Kid to be tried in court and sentenced for his crimes. Dinner at the famous stage stop La Posta de Mesilla restaurant, dating back to the 1840’s and hosting famous western legends like Pat Garrett, Doc Holiday, Geronimo, Pancho Villa, Butch Cassidy, and stage stop for the Butterfield Overland stagecoach passengers.

Day 12 Mesilla - Douglas - 220 miles, 4 hrs

Today we head to the historic copper, gold and silver mining town of Bisbee where we stop for a mid-morning coffee and a look around town. Then it’s off to spend some time in the world-famous old west town of Tombstone, where the legendary shootout at the O.K. corral occurred and was written into the annals of western history. Finally a ride into Tucson and an evening to relax before our last day of riding.

Day 14 Tucson - Phoenix - 160 miles, 2 1/2 hrs
Day 14 Tucson - Phoenix

Our last day on the tour today, we’ll start with a ride to the Pima Air & Space Museum, otherwise known as “The boneyard”. Acres upon acres of decommissioned military aircraft, some for a later return to service, or partially disassembled and laid out in the dry desert sun for spare parts. Then a brief ride to return our trusty iron horses at Harley-Davidson Scottsdale, with a last chance to do a bit of souvenir shopping at the dealership. We finish our adventure with a farewell dinner at the hotel, a few drinks and share our memories of the amazing southwest United States.
