Wild Wild West Self Guided Motorcycle Tour

Our 16 day western scenic motorcycle tour is spectacular in every way. As you ride on a modern day cowboy adventure, the grandeur and colour of the landscape will blow you away. Out of Las Vegas ride the captivating morning light of the Nevada desert, into the dazzling pink, cream and red Utah canyon lands zigzagging the “switchbacks” of Zion NP. Be amazed at Bryce Canyon. Ride Highway 12 to iconic Monument Valley. Stop at the rim of the Grand Canyon for the reddest sunsets ever – helicopter flight is optional but exceptional! Ride historic Route 66 through Seligman, Kingman and the ghost town of Oatman. Rest in Las Vegas (if you can), a unique city with its glitzy casinos and hotels! Head out to the infamous Cottontail ranch.  Explore the back country of Mammoth Lakes and then sublime, beautiful Yosemite National Park before reaching San Francisco for some sight-seeing. Cross Golden Gate Bridge, ride down the famous Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, through Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel and then pound the cliff edge of Big Sur. Head inland passing Bakersfield, the country music capital of California, and crossing the Sierra Nevadas. Finally hit the bends that mark the descent into the hottest, driest place in North America, Death Valley. Up out the other side it’s an easy ride back to Las Vegas.

Day 1 Hello Las Vegas! Arrive
Day 1 Hello Las Vegas!

From the airport, just take the brief shuttle ride to your hotel. If you're still awake, I think you’ll find something to do this evening in the glamour and glitz of this 24 hour entertainment resort town!!

Day 2 Las Vegas - Zion NP - 210 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 2 Las Vegas - Zion NP

After breakfast, you collect your motorbike from the local Harley-Davidson dealer, and the adventure begins. You head east along the shores of Lake Mead, and then take your first dip into the scenic wonders ahead with a ride along the Valley of Fire. After lunch your afternoon’s ride takes you away from the desert heat towards your overnight stop in Springdale, sitting pretty on the Virgin River and overlooked by red and yellow sandstone bluffs.

Day 3 Zion NP - Bryce Canyon NP - 185 miles, 5.5 hrs
Day 3 Zion NP - Bryce Canyon NP

Today the scenery is just amazing. We suggest an early rise to catch the morning light as you ride under the spectacular cliffs of Zion National Park on the ‘Switchbacks of Zion’. Then you head East and then North climbing up to nearly 3000 m to Bryce, with a stop at the Waterside Inn in Hatch (check out the jail!). If there’s time take a quick detour to Kanab, one host to movie stars on location, in the heyday of Westerns. This afternoon there is plenty of time to ride along the park road and stop at the many scenic lookouts, or possibly take a short hike. The views are quite stunning!

Day 4 Bryce Canyon - Bluff - 320 miles, 6 hrs
Day 4 Bryce Canyon - Bluff

It’s an early start for possibly the most spectacular day’s riding you will ever experience. Today you’ll find out what ‘the Grand Staircase’ is, and discover the meaning of the phrase ‘inhospitable environment’ as you cross the Escalante Wilderness. You’ll take in the sleepy towns of Torrey and Escalante, the daunting Capitol Reef – the Devil’s Backbone’ – Glen Canyon, the Colorado River and Natural Bridges National Park, before your day ends with a final leg to picturesque Bluff. This evening go for a stroll, maybe a quick bite at the Twin Rocks Café, and visit the old stockade. This is a day you will never forget.

Day 5 Bluff - Grand Canyon - 230 miles, 4 hrs
Day 5 Bluff - Grand Canyon

Another early start is suggested to catch the magical morning light in the Valley of the Gods as you ride the Mokee Dugway (crazy name, crazy road!). Some of Thelma & Louise was filmed here. You then ride through the classic Wild West landscape of stark sandstone buttes and forbidding pinnacles of rock poking from an endless expanse of drifting red sands, known to the world as Monument Valley. It is only when you are ‘in’ Monument Valley that you realise how your perception of the Wild West has been shaped by this one place - a perfect scenic distillation. Stop at the Tribal Park, where you can learn more about this magical ‘valley’ and Navajo culture, and grab some lunch. It’s then a fairly straightforward ride to your next spectacular sight, a little river cutting better known as the Grand Canyon. Stop at trading posts along the way for silver and turquoise art and jewellery, once traded for food by the local artisans. Take time on the Rim Drive to stop and take in the views and marvel at the geological strata in the late afternoon light.

Day 6 Grand Canyon - Kingman - 180 miles, 3 hrs
Day 6 Grand Canyon - Kingman

First thing – how about a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon? It will take your breath away as you soar over the ravine and follow the river’s meandering path through the rock. Genuinely awesome! A short ride takes you to Williams, a nice little town with a good vibe, and plenty of places to grab a bite and do a bit of shopping. You’re on Route 66 now …. Next stop Seligman, and this afternoon you’ll get to see many iconic Route 66 sights as you pass through Truxton, Peach Springs and Hackberry. Your destination today, Kingman, is considered the ‘heart’ of the Mother Road, in the middle of the longest remaining stretch of the road through the Hulapai Indian Reservation, with its scenic buttes and mesas.

Day 7 Kingman - Las Vegas - 250 miles, 5.5 hrs
Day 7 Kingman - Las Vegas

You continue on Route 66, known locally as the Oatman Highway, over the Black Mountains and on to the ghost town of Oatman. Now a tourist attraction, with wandering burros a traffic hazard, the town still retains its historic charm. You’ll then take a meandering ride on to Las Vegas, crossing the Colorado River by bridge, rather than helicopter, and taking in the Hoover Dam and scenic Lakeshore Drive.

Day 8 Las Vegas Free day
Day 8 Las Vegas

The day is yours to do as you wish. Visit the many hotels and casinos, the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead again, or Red Rock Canyon (our favourite) – the choices are too numerous to mention!

Day 9 Las Vegas - Bishop - 265 miles, 4 hrs
Day 9 Las Vegas - Bishop

It’s a relaxing day’s ride today as you shake Las Vegas out of your system, heading north out of Vegas. Skirting Death Valley on your left and the Nevada nuclear test sites on your right, you’ll find yourself at the infamous Cottontail Ranch (not your lunch stop!). From here head west into the mountains, with a lovely winding ride bringing you to Bishop

Day 10 Bishop - Oakhurst - 185 miles, 4 hrs
Day 10 Bishop - Oakhurst

Today is spent exploring the wonders of Yosemite. You ride through the ski resort of Mammoth before a stop at the slightly weird Mono Lake. Then you continue climbing through the winding granite canyons of the famous Tioga Pass, rising to over 3000 m, stopping to take a trail etched into a vertical cliff as the mist from a 900 m waterfall keeps you cool, and just enjoy the park's natural wonders. Yosemite is just as beautiful, wild, rich and sublime as you’d expect, only more so! The riding fun isn’t over yet, as you head south down scenic Highway 41 through the California goldfields to Oakhurst

Day 11 Oakhurst - San Francisco - 265 miles, 6 hrs
Day 11 Oakhurst - San Francisco

You’ll ride along the Merced River before picking up a lovely back-road over the mountains towards San Jose. Some urban interstate brings you round Oakland, where you cross San Rafael Bridge into Marin County. This is an unabashed introduction to Californian self-indulgence: a pleasure zone of conspicuous luxury and abundant natural beauty, with sunshine, sandy beaches, high mountains and thick redwood forests. You’ll then ride south to pretty Sausalito and the chance to see San Francisco from across the Bay. Once a hotspot for drunken sailors and bawdy saloons, Sausalito is now much more like the Cote d’Azur. Then it’s over the Golden Gate Bridge and into San Francisco.

Day 12 San Francisco Free Day
Day 12 San Francisco

A free day to enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco, a funky individualistic, surprisingly small place – and certainly the most liberal city in the USA. There are lots of excursions to choose from such as a trip to Alcatraz, a Bay Cruise or a Napa Valley wine tour.

Day 13 San Francisco - Sam Simeon - 220 miles, 5 hrs
Day 13 San Francisco - Sam Simeon

Roll out of the city on the beautiful, winding Skyline Boulevard, then onto the Pacific Coast Highway, the famous Route 1, to Santa Cruz for lunch, fun and sun on the beach. This is yet another great ride, and you end with the coastal grandeur of the Monterrey Peninsula, whose crescent shaped bay and cypress groves have been celebrated by poets, authors and artists. Stop for lunch, take in the shops, Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the great ambience before your incredible afternoon ride – the Big Sur. 90 miles along cliff edges, this road is universally considered the best section of Highway 1. Rocky cliffs form a sublime landscape, redwood groves line river canyons and the Santa Lucia Mountains rise out of the blue-green Pacific. About halfway along you’ll come to Esalen, named for the long-gone native tribe who once enjoyed the natural hot springs on a cliff top high above the raging surf. Then cruise up to Hurst Castle, where you may take a guided tour of this grand mansion, and your overnight in San Simeon.

Day 14 Sam Simeon - Lone Pine - 305 miles, 5.5 hrs
Day 14 Sam Simeon - Lone Pine

You’ll set off through tiny seaside art communities and miles of sandy beaches to Morro Bay. Here you head inland and take the Carillo Highway across mountains and farmland to Bakersfield, country music capital of California. From here you head back into the hills, following the Kern River to Lake Isabella Reservoir and Sequoia National Park. Both Isabella and Kernville towns were moved following the damming of the Kern River and the creation of Lake Isabella reservoir in the 1960s. As with many of our small-town stops on this tour, this area is a haven for wildlife and nature lovers, with no major industries or businesses, reliant almost totally on tourism. Your day’s ride ends with the descent to Lone Pine, and your historic hotel. Hopefully there’s time to visit Alabama Hills the local film museum too.

Day 15 Lone Pine - Las Vegas - 275 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 15 Lone Pine - Las Vegas

Well, you’re nearly there, but you have one more spectacular ride planned for today. You descend down switchbacks that zig-zag into Death Valley. The vista is immense, like looking across a sea of sand and stone. Stop for lunch at Furnace Creek (aptly named!) you then rise up from the valley floor to over 600 m elevation at the once thriving Death Valley Junction, current population 4! From here, it is an easy run into Las Vegas. If there’s time visit Red Rock Canyon before you return your motorcycle and enjoy your Farewell Party.

Day 16 Depart Las Vegas

The end of the road and farewell. We hope you've got plenty of photos because you've got an awful lot of memories to bring home. Have you just ridden the most scenic motorcycle tour on Earth? Very possibly!
