Day 1 Welcome to Denver Arrive
Day 1 Welcome to Denver

Take a down town shuttle or taxi from the airport to your hotel in the early evening. If time permits wander down the central 16th Street Mall to take your pick of restaurants.

Day 2 Denver - Cheyenne - 175 miles, 4 hrs
Day 2 Denver - Cheyenne

After breakfast collect your Harley and then head into the Rocky Mountains for some great riding to set the tone. Lovely sweeping roads rise to over 2000m for the next 75 or so miles. And your suggested lunch stop is no ordinary lunch stop, it is the 5* hotel that inspired Stephen King to write ‘The Shining’.

You then change direction and head north-east. The mountain vistas make way for open grassland this afternoon - the land west of Cheyenne was the setting for the original ‘Virginian’ stories. With a fair wind there should be time to see the golden domed State Capitol, and the Frontier Days Old West Museum, a must for those of you interested in the days of the Old West with its collection of horse-drawn vehicles, Indian costumes, rodeo mementoes and even a rustic saloon.

Day 3 Cheyenne - Rapid City - 290 miles, 6 hrs
Day 3 Cheyenne - Rapid City

Today’s ride will lead you on back-roads to Black Hills National Park. Stop at Fort Laramie, founded in 1854 and the oldest and most important garrisoned outpost in Wyoming. Now a national historic site, 22 original structures remain. Nearby is Register Cliff, a day’s hike down the trail, where pioneers ‘signed in’ on the sandstone walls of the cliff; and the Oregon Trail Ruts, where the pioneer wagons carved deep ruts for several hundred yards in the soft sandstone above the North Platte River. You then continue north towards Thunder Basin National Grassland, following the old stagecoach route, and then head into South Dakota and pick up the interstate for your ride into Rapid City.

Day 4 Rapid City - the Badlands- Rapid City - 140 miles, 3 hrs
Day 4 Rapid City - the Badlands- Rapid City

Today starts the first of two circular loops from Rapid city into the Old West, this to the Badlands National park. Set in the prairies and plains of South Dakota the park encompasses the amazing Badlands Wall of bizarre water sculpted buttes, pinnacles, spires and steep gullies. This national monument serves as a backdrop for bighorn sheep, bison and pronghorn and belongs to the Oglala Lakota Nation, the second-largest American Indian Reservation.

Day 5 Rapid City - Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Sturgis - Rapid City - 154 miles, 3.5 hrs
Day 5 Rapid City - Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Sturgis - Rapid City

Our second circular tour takes in 4 stops at some classic Old West spots. From Rapid City you head south west to Mount Rushmore National Monument. Come face to face with the 18m high granite carved sculpture of 4 US presidents. You’ll then ride north through the Black Hills national Forest up to the Deadwood, with its Victorian architecture and once the haunt of Wild bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. Now it’s supposedly the largest historic preservation project in the USA and famed for legalised gaming. From here you head out up the scenic winding Spearfish Canyon Highway to Spearfish. Then onto Sturgis, home of the annual Harley-Davidson® rally, one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world. From here it’s an easy ride back into Rapid City.

Day 6 Rapid City - Sheridan - 290 miles, 5 hrs
Day 6 Rapid City - Sheridan

You leave Rapid City behind and ride the pioneer trails of General Custer and his men in 1874 and cross the state border into Wyoming. You’ll detour to the Devil’s Tower, important in the legends of native Americans and a landmark for the pioneers, rising nearly 400 m above the valley floor, and the first ever national monument in the USA. And if it looks familiar, it was used as the site where the spaceships landed in ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. You then head on further West to Sheridan.

Day 7 Sheridan - Billings - 150 miles, 3 hrs
Day 7 Sheridan - Billings

Today you head North shortly crossing into Montana and the Cheyenne Indian reservation. We suggest a stop at Little Bighorn National Monument, site of one of the most famous battles in American history – Custer’s last stand against Cheyenne & Sioux Indians who were fighting to preserve their way of life. Time permitting you could also take a diversion west to Bighorn Canyon. The park has historic ranches to visit, the largest herd of wild horses in the USA, magnificent Bighorn Sheep roaming the high desert and the Bighorn River and canyon. You then head to Billings for your evening stop.

Day 8 Billings - Yellow Stone - 240 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 8 Billings - Yellow Stone

Heading south west you’re in for a wow of a day. You’ll pass into Wyoming and the Custer Gallatin national forest today with its myriad creeks and trails. Then you’ll ride one of the most famous passes in America, Bear Tooth. The Beartooth Highway, only open in the summer, is 68 miles of breath taking views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, and open high alpine plateaus dotted with countless glacial lakes, forested valleys, waterfalls and wildlife. Later in the day you get to see one of the wonders of the natural World, Yellowstone.

Day 9 Yellowstone Free day
Day 9 Yellowstone

So much to see and do – words can’t describe the beauty of Yellowstone, you just have to see and smell it. It’s one of the most diverse ecosystems accessible by road in the United States. And you mustn't miss Old Faithful. This cone geyser is one of the most predictable geographical features on Earth, erupting almost every 63 minutes.

Day 10 Yellowstone - Jackson - 125 miles, 2.5 hrs
Day 10 Yellowstone - Jackson

It’s a short ride today, but there is no way you could leave the Rockies without enjoying the beautiful Tetons and the ski resort of Jackson, surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 11 Jackson - Vernal - 310 miles, 5 hrs
Day 11 Jackson - Vernal

You’re heading South Into Utah today. Stop at Rock Springs, an energy rich oil and gas area, known as the Home of 56 Nationalities because of the influx of immigrants from all over the world who came to work in the coal mines in the area. Further South stop at the Flaming Gorge Dam and take a visit deep inside the dam. Finally take the scenic byway to your overnight stop at Vernal.

Day 12 Vernal - Steamboat Springs - 175 miles, 3 hrs
Day 12 Vernal - Steamboat Springs

Today’s route takes you back into Colorado through wide open, flat desert like country. For the natural history lovers take a diversion to Dinosaur National Monument, a Dinosaur fossil bone quarry. Turn off North at Jensen for the Quarry fossil exhibit and to see the Green River where it comes through the Split Mountain Gorge. Onward to Steamboat Springs, named after the hot spring, located near the present-day library and the old train depot, that sounded like a steamboat to the early settlers. Now a major Rocky mountains ski resort, if you arrive early enough take a scenic gondola ride up Mt Werner for some spectacular views.

Day 13 Steamboat springs - Denver - 260 miles, 5.5 hrs
Day 13 Steamboat springs - Denver

Our final leg of this tour presents you with fantastic motorcycle roads through the mountains. The Colorado River Headwaters Scenic Byway takes you to the unspoilt town of Kremmling, where the Moose Café will give you a real slice of hometown Colorado. You continue up the Colorado River valley to Hot Sulphur Springs, with its 22 thermal pools and quaint local museum, and then head north past Great Lake and over the Great Divide and Trail Ridge Pass, at over 12,000 ft (nearly 3700 m) the highest pass in America, with some great roads and spectacular views. And should the weather not be perfect, you can visit the Buffalo Bill Museum in Golden, or head straight back to Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson giving you more time to sightsee in Denver.

Day 14 Depart Denver Depart
Day 14 Depart Denver

There’s time for some last minute shopping and relaxing. Denver’s 16th St Mall, just a short walk from the hotel, is a must. Then it is off to the airport and the flight back home.
