Mountain Roads Self Guided Motorcycle Tour

Our 15-day Mountain Roads motorcycle tour has proved over the years to be our most popular self-guided tour of the Canadian West. The route is designed to take you over the most scenic mountain roads of Western Canada and the Rockies. Depart from Vancouver and head east to the warm fruit and wine regions of the interior. Continue via Revelstoke, the Kootenay lakes and across the continental divide to Banff. Then discover the natural beauty and wildlife of the majestic Rocky Mountains and Yoho, Banff, and Jasper National Parks. Visit the tumbling falls in Wells Gray Park and cross the rugged Coastal Mountains to Whistler and scenic, vibrant Vancouver. Stay in cosy lodges and hotels, and enjoy the true hospitality of the West in an unforgettable two weeks.

This tour can also start/finish in Calgary on our Authorised Harley-Davidson rental motorcycles – please ask for prices.

  • Day 2: Vancouver - Kelowna (395 km).

After collecting your motorcycle, head east on the Trans-Canada Highway, following the Fraser River to the National historic centre at Fort Langley. Visit the Othello Tunnels in Hope, where Sylvester Stallone filmed First Blood, and ascend the Coquihalla Pass before arriving in the warm Okanagan Valley, famous for its sandy beaches, warm lakes, fruit orchards and wineries.

  • Day 3: Kelowna- Revelstoke (205-350 km).

A choice of rides awaits you today. Ride north to Shuswap Lake, visit the beach in Sicamous, and then ride through the Monashee Mountains to the historic Last Spike, where the Trans-Canadian railroad was completed in 1885. Alternatively take a longer twisty route through the Monashee range taking in big lakes with interesting little ferry crossings before you reach the friendly town of Revelstoke.

  • Day 4: Revelstoke (50 km).

Free day. Start with a scenic 26-km ride to the top of Mt Revelstoke National Park, and explore the glaciers, mountain roads and cedar forests of Glacier National Park. You can also go canoeing, white water rafting, hiking or flightseeing (optional).

  • Day 5: Revelstoke - Invermere (280 km).

Some spectacular riding today, the Trans-Canada Highway skirts Mt Revelstoke National Park before taking you through Glacier National Park to the historic town of Golden. Next it’s the Columbia Valley and the many lakes of the West Kootenays, and the natural hot springs at Radium before arriving at your pretty lakeside destination near Invermere.

  • Day 6: Invermere - Banff (155km).

With an early start you may see bears, deer and eagles here in the trench between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains. Cross the continental divide, ride the Sinclair Canyon, see the Indian Paint Pots and Marble Canyon in Kootenay National Park. Then it’s on to Banff, one of the most scenic towns anywhere in the world with lots of things to do and see.

  • Day 7: Banff (100 km).

Free day. Banff offers plenty of options. You can explore Lake Minnewanka, the Hoodoos and Bow Falls. Take the gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain and soak in the hot springs. Or try your hand at horse riding, canoeing, hiking or mountain biking, perhaps finishing off the day with a tasty western dinner at Wild Bill's.

  • Day 8: Banff – Jasper (285 km).

Today you ride what many consider to be one of the world's most scenic highways, the Icefields Parkway, flanked by snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes and forested valleys. See the Crowfoot Glacier and famous Peyto Lake, marvel at the azure blue waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, cross the Bow and Sunwapta Passes and stop at the Columbia Icefields Centre to take a ride or walk on a Glacier. Always keep an eye open for some of the diverse wildlife that frequently shows up on the roadside. All before a two night stay in Jasper National Park.

  • Day 9: Jasper (50 km).

Free day. You have full day to explore more of the Rockies and Jasper National Park today. We include a 90-minute morning cruise on Maligne Lake in our itinerary, which will give you plenty of time take the mountain road to Mount Edith Cavell, hike the Maligne Canyon, or ride the Sky Tram and have lunch on top of Whistler Mountain.

  • Day 10: Jasper - Clearwater (315 km).

The Yellowhead Highway takes you to the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, Mount Robson, then through the Caribou Mountains. Allow time to take a lake safari in the pristine wilderness before continuing along the Thompson River to Clearwater and Wells Gray Park.

  • Day 11: Clearwater (100 km).

Free day. A chance to explore the magnificent Wells Gray Park, set in the heart of the Caribou Mountains. You can just feel the solitude in 530,000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness. Visit Dawson Falls where the Murtle River plunges more than 18 metres, the Devil's Punch Bowl where the force of water has pounded holes into the rocks, and Helmcken Falls, 3 times the height of Niagara Falls! Ride out into the BC Lake District or try some horse-riding, fishing, hiking, golf, kayaking, or whitewater rafting. You can just feel the solitude!

  • Day 12: Clearwater - Whistler (350 km).

Continuing through the Caribou with its many fishing lakes and forests you pick up the Goldrush Trail to the Coastal Mountains, with 2 hours riding round mountain curves and through great scenery to the ski and summer resort of Whistler. Check out the magnificent Peak to Peak Gondola and take the ride if you dare.

  • Day 13: Whistler - Vancouver (140 km).

Ride the scenic Sea to Sky Highway along the Pacific Ocean to Vancouver. Visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge and maybe Grouse Mountain before heading into Vancouver via the beautiful Stanley Park.

  • Day 14: Vancouver (50 km).

Free day. Why not do some city sightseeing, Chinatown, Granville Island, Gastown and Robson Street will keep you entertained. Take the ferry to Vancouver Island and visit Victoria with its historic buildings, Fisgard lighthouse, go whale watching on the protected Pacific coastline or just relax in Stanley Park.
