High Chaparral Self Guided Motorcycle Tour

The High Chaparral – images of the West – the pioneer spirit, Native American culture, the familiar scenery from a hundred films, and then more amazing, vast scenery. You really are here! Our High Chaparral self guided motorcycle tour includes all this but adds adventure activities too! It’s not just about great riding and great accommodation, we have allowed plenty of time for you to explore and experience the natural wonders of Arizona and Utah.

Arriving in Phoenix, Arizona your motorcycle ride takes you north to beautiful Sedona, a vibrant arty small town set in a mesmerising multi-hued desert landscape. From here you head to Page to the land of  slot canyons , dramatic dams and Lake Powell. It’s then up to the mystical Zion National Park and dramatic Bryce Canyon. Via the Grand Staircase (Escalante) you zigzag through Capitol Reef National Park, with 300m drops both sides, to reach Moab, outdoor fun town where you’ll have ample time to live the adventure you’ve always dreamt of.

You then head over onto the twisty Million Dollar Highway and down to Durango in the south western corner of Colorado. Here you’ll have free time to take the Silverton and Durango narrow gauge steam railway. The Navajo lands and historic site at Mesa Verde is next up on your way to the most spectacular vista, the iconic Monument Valley. Your amazing trip ends with a ride through Apache National Forest; a very special highway which will leave you breathless as you return to Scottsdale. By journey’s end you will have visited at least five national parks and carry home a fully loaded bag of memories.

DAY 1 Arrival Phoenix -
DAY 1 Arrival Phoenix

Welcome to Phoenix Arizona! Walk out of the airport and take a deep breath of warm, dry, comfortable desert air and take the complimentary shuttle to your hotel.

If you’re getting in a day or two early, we definitely suggest you pay a visit to Taliesin West, the home and museum campus of Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s Architect. It’s just a few minutes away and the views alone are breathtaking, and his concepts and ideas about incorporating surrounding nature elements into his architecture are truly fascinating. Enjoy!

DAY 2 Phoenix – Sedona 215 miles
DAY 2 Phoenix – Sedona

Take a look out the window and savour the amazing sunrise that signals the beginning of a new day. Start it with a good American breakfast and then pack your bags to go and pick up your motorcycle. A few signatures later you’re sitting in the saddle of your favourite motorcycle, off to Hwy 87 and the Tonto National Forest. On beautiful wide sweeping roads you’ll see classic Arizona vistas, occasionally passing the road sign that we all love: ‘bends ahead!’

As you chase the sunlight to Sedona you get to awe-inspiring red rock country – Snoopy Rock, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock - where formations, shapes and vegetation seem on fire. You reach Sedona totally relaxed and check into your uptown hotel. Uptown Sedona is the place to be. It has plenty of old town charm and is a ‘must see’ stop for all who come to visit. Its charming main street is a vibrant pedestrian-friendly destination that embraces the beauty of the surrounding red rocks and creates a unique experience. With plenty of restaurants, shops and galleries it’s time to go out to explore. Look out over red rock country and imagine Big John Cannon and his family running their High Chaparral Ranch in the 1870s.

DAY 3 Sedona – Page 160 miles
DAY 3 Sedona – Page

Before you head out of Sedona you take a little detour on Red Rock Loop Road. It rewards you with stunning views of Sedona and its surrounding rock formations. Stop, turn off your engine and absorb the total tranquility. As you connect to the main road again you ride your bike up the hills and into ‘America’s Most Vertical City’ and largest ghost town. Located near the top of Cleopatra Hill (1650 m) between Prescott and Sedona is historic Jerome. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. It’s an enchanting town, and a photographer's paradise. It hasn’t changed much in nearly 100 years. Many of the buildings used by present-day businesses are those built after the fires of 1894 and 1899.

From Sedona head north past Slide Rock State Park towards Flagstaff where you cross Route 66. This afternoon you'll reach Page where there’ll then be time to take an exhilarating slot canyon excursion, a stunning boat ride on Lake Powell, a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam or a detour to Marble Canyon and Lee’s Ferry, one of the few crossing points of the Colorado river for hundreds of miles.

DAY 4 Page – Zion 155 miles
DAY 4 Page – Zion

Start your trip early, there’s more exciting scenery and activity on the plan for today. First stop is Glen Canyon Dam, the second largest dam on the Colorado River, and an amazing feat of engineering. Then you’ll head north-west toward Zion National Park on a great scenic road through Kanab (once a popular filming location). On your way be sure to take a short detour to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Then make your way toward the surreal and monstrous landscapes of Zion National park. There’s plenty to do in the area! Maybe hire an off-road quad bike, or perhaps go for a horseback ride, do a bit of shopping for that unique souvenir?  Or you can also take your bike and ride along the bottom of the canyon to Springdale, stop at the visitor centre and catch the free Zion Park Shuttle, which brings you further into the park where no private vehicles are allowed.

DAY 5 Zion – Torrey 200 miles
DAY 5 Zion – Torrey

A short ride from Zion leaves you plenty of time to explore the beauty of Bryce Canyon and engage in activities like horseback riding, scenic flights, mountain biking or guided ATV tours. Of course you can limit your adventure to just visiting the lookout points inside the park. To get to Rainbow Point, the last vista point, it’s about 20 miles so it will take several hours to complete the entire park including the scenic views. One of the first viewpoints is Sunrise Point which offers a hike down into the canyon. It is a great trail, about 2 miles in total, but watch out, the air is pretty thin at almost 3,000 m elevation and the climb back up is fairly strenuous. In return you’re rewarded by amazing vistas.

From Bryce enjoy the cool mountain air while you’re riding through pine forests. You’ll follow a little creek with its sparkling, clear, mountain water. Then it's onto Hwy 12, a rollercoaster ride - just made for motorcycles - all 122 miles of it! Look out for the old schoolhouse in Henrieville then you hit the “stairs” in the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. Notice the different colours of sandstone to the north and south. Between Escalante and Boulder, you ride the “Hogsback”  and there's hairpin with drops off down into deep canyons below,  all are wide and visible - but don’t get surprised by oncoming traffic. You'll cross groves of pine and aspen, followed by the meadowlands of Boulder Mountain before finally heading into your overnight stop at Torrey, the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park.

DAY 6 Torrey – Moab 160 miles
DAY 6 Torrey – Moab

First thing head over to Capitol Reef National Park. At times you’ll ride along the rim with 300 m drops on both sides. Both the riding and the scenery are truly incredible. On the top of the mountain you’re riding through pine and then birch forests before you drop down into the valley again. Then the bends become wide sweepers and the trees are replaced by bizarre rock formations. There are several sights along the way, including petroglyphs.  The quaint little town of Hanksville awaits, with tasty buffalo burgers.

Enjoy the little break and reflect on the last 150 miles – you’ll want to go back and do it again. Back in the saddle, from here the road is straighter but picturesque and with very little traffic. Even I-70 – a freeway that leads from western Utah all the way to the East Coast into Washington DC – is a scenic ride for the next 30 miles. After another 30 miles you'll reach Moab, Utah’s No1 adventure city, located right on the Colorado River.

DAY 7 Moab Adventure Day Free Day
DAY 7 Moab Adventure Day

This is action day! You can pre-book any one of the following adventures:

1. Hummer safari

2. Horseback riding

3. White water rafting (several to choose from)

4. Hot air balloon sunrise adventure

However if these don't take your fancy there are 3 awesome parks within just a few miles of Moab. Take your motorcycle into Arches National Park, Canyonlands National park or Dead Horse State Park with their spectacular rock formations and colours.

DAY 8 Moab – Durango 200 miles
DAY 8 Moab – Durango

Leaving Moab behind, you will notice a dramatic change in scenery as you climb through the lush wooded roads high in the San Juan Mountains. At Ouray, a historic spa town, stop for lunch. The steep climb out of the town brings you onto the famous Million Dollar Highway. The 12-mile challenging ride takes you over 3 mountain passes, all well over 3,000 m, affording you some of the best views in the state. The highway cuts through the Uncompahgre Gorge all the way up to the summit of Red Mountain Pass, through the heart of the San Juan Mountains, and down into Silverton, with its unique “Wild West” ambience and the highest Harley-Davidson store in the world. Once there you can cool your engine for a bit before riding the last pass of the day, and follow the meandering Animas River down to Durango.

DAY 9 Durango Free Day
DAY 9 Durango

Enjoy at leisure this amazing railroad town on the Animas river. We recommend taking the wonderful steam train on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Follow the same route taken over a century ago by miners, settler and cowboys, through awesome canyons through the remote wilderness of the San Juan National Forest to Silverton and back.

Alternatively, there are museums to visit such as the Powerhouse Science Center in a former power plant or the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum. Visit the beautiful James Ranch in the Animas River Valley with its spruce nursery, cattle and organic vegetable and flower garden. Or take the opportunity for some walking on the Animas River Trail. For the more adventurous there's white water rafting, kayaking and tubing. We know you'll have an amazing day whatever you choose to do in Durango.

DAY 10 Durango – Bluff 160 miles
DAY 10 Durango – Bluff

Rise and ride out of Durango first thing in the morning for a different picture of Colorado. Mesa Verde National Park is a great first stop of the day with more winding roads and spectacular views of the cliff dwellings. This is the ancestral home of the Pueblo people with a rich archeological heritage. The historic cave dwellings of Hovenweep National Monument is next up, to the west of Cortez, on the Cajon Mesa of the Great Sage Plain. You will then continue on to the quiet little oasis of Bluff.

Day 11 Bluff – Chinle 140 miles
Day 11 Bluff – Chinle

Out of Bluff ride south to one of the most iconic places in the USA – Monument Valley. As you ride around a corner the road straightens and a single line drops down into Navajo land, seemingly disappearing somewhere between the red monuments. Here is a perfect stop for one of the best pictures you can take on this tour and some of you might even remember the spot from the movie ‘Forest Gump’. You ride closer to the monuments and after a few turns make your way up to the tribal park. Now you’re right in front of a formation that reminds you of westerns, John Wayne and Marlboro commercials – it seems you’ve been here before. Before you continue your ride take some last photos - it is kind of hard to get away from this place. Just down the road you enter Arizona again and some 95 miles later you reach Chinle and the mystical Canyon de Chelly.

Day 12: Chinle - Holbrook 150 miles
Day 12: Chinle - Holbrook

It’ll be an early rise as you take the scenic White House Ruin Trail to several viewing points in the magical Canyon de Chelly. The park's distinctive geological feature is Spider Rock, a sandstone spire that rises 240 m from the canyon floor and is visible from South Rim Drive. It has served as the scene of a number of TV commercials. According to traditional Navajo beliefs the taller of the two spires is the home of spider woman. Exit the park heading south through the enormous Navajo Reservation,  continue on the I-40 / Route 66 and then take the Petrified Forest Loop Drive. If you have time stop at Meteor Crater along the way.

Tonight’s resting place is an historic Route 66 town – Holbrook. This is well known to Route 66 aficionados as it features the iconic Wigwam Motel. Rooms are shaped like tepees but are actually made of solid construction material. It also has a few classic cars in the parking lot to look at.

Day 13 Holbrook – Phoenix 250 miles
Day 13 Holbrook – Phoenix

Today you'll ride to Winslow so you'll get to stand on the famous corner. From their it's a lovely ride south to Strawberry through Apache-Sitgreaves and Tonto National Forests. It is then a suburban ride back to drop off and say goodbye to your trusty Harley's in Phoenix.

Day 14 Depart Phoenix -
