Route 66 Original Guided Motorcycle Tour

The most iconic adventure through the heartland of “real America”, our Route 66 Original tour offers no better way to experience the history and genesis of American popular culture. The “Mother Road” was instigated to aid the motorised migration to California in the 1920s and 30s. Every mile is steeped in automotive history. Along this boulevard of dreams lie the first petrol station, the first road side diners, the first motels – all to cater for the new breed of automotive traveller. Encompassing the varied and amazing landscapes of 8 US states ride through farmland, rolling hills, great plains, scenic mountains, incredible Arizona and California deserts and valleys including the wondrous Grand Canyon! To ride Route 66 is, most simply put, to ride the American dream.

With Orange & Black you will explore so much more of the original route. We pride ourselves on the fantastic personal relationships we have with small town America’s friendliest people and places. Meet self-professed rednecks at work and play. Enjoy our picks of local cuisine – slow-smoked hickory barbecue, Mexican chimichangas, New Mexican Navajo tacos and more. We’ve been riding down historic Route 66 longer than just about anyone else and our personal service, experienced local guides and support, and commitment to riding only the latest Harley-Davidson motorcycles make our tour that little bit more special.

‘And I promise you if you join the tour with Orange and Black on Route 66 it will change your life. It did mine.’ Henry Cole, September 2016

Day 1 Arrive Chicago Arrive
Day 1 Arrive Chicago

Welcome to Chicago! On arrival at the airport make your way to our downtown hotel via taxi or CTA train. Take some time to explore all that this vibrant metropolis has to offer including Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Navy Pier, or take a riverboat tour of downtown. Don’t forget to make your way over to Adams St. and Michigan Avenue to see the start of Route 66! Just be sure to be back in time to meet your tour guides at the hospitality desk, get signed in and enjoy the complimentary welcome dinner this evening. It all begins now!

Day 2 Chicago – Springfield, IL - 240 miles, 6 hrs
Day 2 Chicago – Springfield, IL

After a hearty breakfast the support vehicle is loaded and it’s off to Woodstock Harley-Davidson to pick up our motorcycles for the adventure to come! You’ll have some time to do a bit of shopping at the dealership before beginning your epic ride down the mother road. We start through Illinois cornbelt countryside and the small towns along Historic Route 66. A leisurely paced afternoon gives us the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with our new motorcycles and riding in the USA. Soon we’ll get to our hotel in the State capitol of Springfield for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Day 3 Springfield – Rolla, MO - 230 miles, 6 hrs
Day 3 Springfield – Rolla, MO

Our trip this morning takes us alongside the corn and soybean fields through the small communities of central Illinois. At the Mississippi River border between Illinois and Missouri we'll take some time to see the original Route 66 Chain of Rocks bridge. After a lunch stop in St. Louis we’ll visit the Missouri Route 66 state park and museum to learn more about the route through this state. Then its on to the beautiful rolling hills of the Ozarks and the Meramec caverns, once a hideout for the notorious Jesse James and his gang. Finally, a ride into our hotel in Rolla for dinner and an evening discussing the day’s events. Get a good night’s rest, tomorrow is the longest day of the tour. You’re only 24 hours from Tulsa!

Day 4 Rolla - Tulsa, OK - 320 miles, 9 hrs
Day 4 Rolla - Tulsa, OK

Our morning begins with weaving our way through more of the twists and turns of the picturesque Ozark hills and hollows, fragrant with the smell of elm, hickory and redbud trees. As we make our way west, hills gradually disappear and give way to the vast openness of the great plains. Soon it’s time to stop for our lunch break as the aroma of slow-smoked southern barbecue lures us into one of the many local cafes. Continuing west we reach the small corner of Kansas the route traverses. It’s only 13.6 miles through Kansas, but we still have to stop in Baxter Springs for a rest break and a few photos. Then it’s a very short ride out of the state and into Oklahoma, with a couple more rest breaks before arriving in Tulsa for the evening.

Day 5 Tulsa – Weatherford, OK - 190 miles, 6 hrs
Day 5 Tulsa – Weatherford, OK

Today begins with a stop at the must-visit Route 66 Harley-Davidson dealership for a tee-shirt and some shopping. Then it's on through Tulsa and back out into the wide and open countryside. Oklahoma has the most miles of Route 66, and more of the original road than any other state. On the way to Oklahoma City we will stop several times to experience major 66 landmarks. After passing through Oklahoma City we’ll ride the longest remaining stretch of the 1928-1932 alignment’s Portland cement. We’ll end our day in western Oklahoma in the college and ranching town of Weatherford. Another fabulous day on the road!

Day 6 Weatherford – Amarillo, TX - 200 miles, 4 hrs
Day 6 Weatherford – Amarillo, TX

This morning we will stop at the best Route 66 museum of all, in Clinton, to gain a better understanding of the route's importance to the development of the United States. Next we’ll zigzag through the expanses of the great plains and small ranching towns. Out here Oklahoma opens up to reveal the vastness of the surrounding countryside - it seems to go on forever! Today we’ll experience art-deco petrol stations, wide open spaces and roads which disappear into the long horizon. Finally, we’ll get to our first historic hotel of the trip, the Big Texan Motel in Amarillo. It’s right next to our dinner spot, the world-famous Big Texan Steak Ranch and the 72ounce (2 Kilo) Steak Challenge. If you can eat the whole dinner in an hour or less it’s free! Are you courageous or crazy enough to try?

Day 7 Amarillo – Santa Fe, NM - 300 miles, 6.5 hrs
Day 7 Amarillo – Santa Fe, NM

First stop, the Cadillac Ranch: a crazy farmer planted Cadillacs in his field, hoping to grow new ones – guess what?! Then it's off to Adrian, home of the Midpoint Café and our halfway point. After stopping for a coffee we leave the great plains behind and head into the natural splendour of the southwest. Riding through the wide open spaces and into the Rocky Mountains, we arrive in the beautiful city of Santa Fe where we will spend the next two nights. Our first stop of the day will be at the crazy Cadillac Ranch. Let your inner hoodlum out and add graffiti to those old cars planted in the ground! After finishing our artwork we’ll ride to the halfway point of the route in Adrian. Here we’ll take some time for pictures and a celebratory cup of coffee and piece of pie at the Midpoint Café. Afterwards we’ll make our way out of the great plains of Texas and into the high chaparral mesas and mountains of New Mexico. Here you can imagine being chased across the landscape by outlaws and Apaches as in the western films of the 1950’s and 1960’s! We’ll ride into the mountains and up to the state capitol of Santa Fe, and our stopover for two nights. Try New Mexican or Mexican cuisine tonight for dinner, accompanied by a Margarita (or three).

Day 8 Santa Fe Rest day
Day 8 Santa Fe

Today is your chance to explore one of the most amazing and beautiful towns in New Mexico. Our hotel is conveniently located near old town plaza, with numerous art galleries, shops and restaurants. It’s an ideal place for a relaxing day. Enjoy shopping, great food and art surrounded by unique and beautiful native American and Spanish colonial architecture. Whatever you decide, you’ll fall in love with this one-of-a-kind town and its charming atmosphere.

Day 9 Santa Fe - Gallup, NM - 225 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 9 Santa Fe - Gallup, NM

Time to get back on the road and into the high chaparral deserts and mountains of New Mexico. It's a picturesque ride to our lunch spot in Old Town Albuquerque. Afterwards we’ll head out into the great scenery and spectacular views of the southwest. Skirting the edges of the Navajo and Zuni reservations we soon arrive in Gallup at our historic hotel. Time for some authentic Mexican food and a couple of drinks to top off an excellent day!

Day 10 Gallup – Williams, AZ - 240 miles, 5 hrs
Day 10 Gallup – Williams, AZ

Into the heart of the southwest today, as we leave New Mexico and head into Arizona! Our first stop will be at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park. Colorful vistas surround us as we make our way through the park - keep your eye out for the terrified trees! Onwards to Holbrook and the quirky Wigwam Motel’s tee-pee hotel rooms. A bit later we’re in Winslow for lunch and a chance to “Take it easy” while standing on the corner…. just like the Eagle’s song. Finally, we head toward the Frisco Peaks and to the last Route 66 town to be bypassed by the interstate, Williams.

Day 11 Williams - 120 miles, 3 hrs
Day 11 Williams

It's just a brief ride this morning to one of the seven wonders of the world, the amazing Grand Canyon. Be sure to pre-book the optional helicopter ride - the best way to see just how enormous the canyon really is. You’ll have the whole day to enjoy visiting the various viewpoints and attractions. At the end of this awe-inspiring trip we’ll head back to Williams for a great night in town.

Day 12 Williams – Needles, CA - 250 miles, 6 hrs
Day 12 Williams – Needles, CA

We start the day with a brief ride to Seligman for the best breakfast on the route. After a wander around town to do a bit of souvenir shopping, we head off to our next stop in Hackberry at the general store. Then a ride through Kingman and over the amazingly scenic and twisty Oatman Highway - considered the best ride on all of the route - and into Oatman. This is a historic gold and silver mining district, famous for its native donkeys that were abandoned when the miners left. Finally we ride down into the Mojave desert’s heat and sunshine, over the Colorado river and into the California town of Needles.

Day 13 Needles – Victorville, CA - 175 miles, 3 hrs
Day 13 Needles – Victorville, CA

Today we ride through the beautiful and desolate Mojave desert. Since it’s going to be hot we’ll take our time and make a few extra stops to keep cool and enjoy our ride. We’ll stop at the famous Roy’s Café and Hotel in Amboy, out in the middle of nowhere. After a lunch stop in Barstow we’ll continue through town, then make one final stop at Elmer’s bottle tree ranch before getting to our hotel in Victorville. Tonight is the perfect opportunity to share your memories, photos and contact information with our fellow participants. Don’t stay up too late, tomorrow is an intense day!

Day 14 Victorville - Los Angeles - 140 miles, 3.5 hrs
Day 14 Victorville - Los Angeles

The final day of our adventure across America is a ride into one of the largest metropolitan areas of the US, Los Angeles. We’ll ride straight to the end of the Route in the Oceanside town of Santa Monica, head up to the end marker for some celebratory photos and then to the pier for lunch. Afterwards you’ll have some time to wander around the pier, dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean and revel in your achievement. Finally, it’s time to ride through town to the motorcycle depot to drop off and say goodbye to our trustworthy motorcycles. Tonight is our complimentary farewell dinner, and the last chance to say bon voyage to our new riding friends.
