Route 66 Lite Guided Motorcycle tour

For a  real journey of discovery and nostalgia, there is no ribbon of road like Route 66! It was this road in 1926 that instigated the first ever motorised migration of a population to California to escape the dust bowl and economic meltdown in the East. Every mile is steeped in automotive history, along this boulevard of dreams lies the first petrol station, the first road side diners, the first motels, all to cater for the new breed of automotive traveller. Everything that started on Route 66 is now an integral part of our culture today. To ride Route 66 is to ride the American dream. Every day you feel you’re riding in your very own road movie but it’s not a movie its reality and it’s your reality each and every day as you ride a Harley on America’s Main Street.

Come and experience the flair and charm of the old route with orange & Black right from the start at Adams Street, Chicago all the way to Santa Monica Pier overlooking the Pacific ocean.

Total mileage c. 2700

Day 1 Arrive Chicago Arrive
Day 1 Arrive Chicago

From Chicago O'Hare airport make your way to the shuttle to take you to your hotel and check in. Hopefully you'll have time to explore some of this amazing vibrant city including the Willis Tower, Navy Pier, or take a downtown architectural river tour. Take a peek at Adams St. and Michigan Avenue to see the start of Route 66! Check in with your tour guides at the welcome desk at the hotel in the late afternoon. In the evening there'll be an opportunity to meet fellow riders at our complimentary Welcome Dinner. We recommend getting an early night, for tomorrow the adventure begins!

Day 2 Chicago – Springfield, IL - 240 miles, 6 hrs
Day 2 Chicago – Springfield, IL

After breakfast, we'll load the support van, go to pick up our motorcycles and begin our adventure. Soon we'll be riding down Historic Route 66 through the Illinois farmland as we follow the Pontiac Trail, as the 'Mother road' was previously called, to the state capital, Springfield.

Day 3 Springfield – Rolla, MO - 230 miles, 6 hrs
Day 3 Springfield – Rolla, MO

In the morning we meander through picturesque small farming towns and countryside to the mighty Mississippi river on the Illinois and Missouri border. We stop to see the Chain of Rocks Bridge which became a part of original Route 66 in 1936. The afternoon stops include the Missouri Route 66 State Park and we visit Meramec Caverns, Jesse James' hideout.  Then we ride to Rolla for dinner and a good night's sleep. Tulsa's now only 24 hours away!

Day 4 Rolla - Tulsa, OK - 320 miles, 9 hrs
Day 4 Rolla - Tulsa, OK

Weaving our way from the rolling Ozark hills today, we head for the great plains. We'll dip and twist and climb with great views of the steep wooded hillsides. This was frontier country in much of the 19th century. Irresistible slow-smoked southern BBQ awaits us for lunch in one of the local smokehouses of Springfield (another one!).  Then it's onto the plains and into Kansas where we stop briefly in Baxter Springs. Only 20 miles of the route into Kansas and we move state again into eastern Oklahoma. Then we've made it to Tulsa for the night.

Day 5 Tulsa – Weatherford, OK - 190 miles, 6 hrs
Day 5 Tulsa – Weatherford, OK

The wide open spaces of western Oklahoma beckons this morning.  Did you know there are more miles of Route 66 in Oklahoma than any other state, and in better condition!? Consequently for bikers and old-road fans alike, it’s a real mecca. For most of the day we ride the "Old 66" through prairie and pasture.  At the Route 66 Interpretive Center in Chandler, the Round Barn in Arcadia, we'll have a sightseeing stop and then ride the longest remaining stretch of the original 1928 -1935 alignment of the route.

We ride through El Reno, over the mile-long pony-truss bridge near Hydro and then spend the night in Weatherford, ranching and college town.

Day 6 Weatherford – Amarillo, TX - 200 miles, 4 hrs
Day 6 Weatherford – Amarillo, TX

The Clinton Route 66 museum is today's starting point and a great place to learn more about the route and its historic importance. There's also time for some souvenir shopping before we get back on the road. We'll ride through small farm towns and over the great plains vast cattle ranches. On entering the Texas panhandle we stop at the iconic U-Drop Inn in Shamrock - our highlight from the film "Cars" (Ramone's Body Shop!) Then across the vast, open plains to Amarillo for a drink and on to the Big Texas Steak Ranch for a much deserved steak!  And it could be your chance to try the 72-oz (2 kg) steak dinner challenge? Finish the whole meal in under 60 minutes and it’s free!

Day 7 Amarillo – Santa Fe, NM - 300 miles, 6.5 hrs
Day 7 Amarillo – Santa Fe, NM

Cadillac Ranch is today's first stop. Run by a group of artists known as the Ant Farm it's an ever-changing art exhibit. Let your inner vandal out and spray paint whatever you like on the half-buried cars! Then it's off to our halfway point at Adrian, home of the Midpoint Café. Here we’ll stop for a cup of coffee, the best pie on Route 66 and of course, some photos, before leaving the great plains behind us. We'll head out into the splendid natural beauty of the Western USA. Our ride is a gradual rise up into the mountains and to Santa Fe, New Mexico - one of the oldest state capitals in the USA.

Day 8 Santa Fe Rest day
Day 8 Santa Fe

Today we rest and relaxation in what is probably also the highest (at over 2250 m) state capital in the USA. Within an easy walk of our hotel, enjoy Santa Fe's numerous museums, art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants. Wander around the historic downtown plaza, taking in its unique combination of Spanish colonial and Native American architecture.

Day 9 Santa Fe - Gallup, NM - 225 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 9 Santa Fe - Gallup, NM

Back on the road again we head out into the southwest deserts. Starting off through the Sandia mountains, we then drop into the Rio Grande valley and our first stop - lunch in Albuquerque’s Old Town Plaza. We ride west through the splendid natural scenery of New Mexico into the Navajo and Zuni Native American reservations. We finish the day in the historic railway town of Gallup.

Day 10 Gallup – Williams, AZ - 240 miles, 5 hrs
Day 10 Gallup – Williams, AZ

Arizona’s spectacular deserts are this mornings destination. At Painted Desert & Petrified Forest National Park we’ll take our time riding through the park stopping to admire the stunning scenery. In Holbrook we'll see the Wigwam Motel’s tepee-shaped rooms on our way to lunch. We'' 'Take it Easy' with the Eagles,  'standin’ on a corner in Winslow Arizona', before continuing to Williams and our hotel for the evening.

Day 11 Williams - 120 miles, 3 hrs
Day 11 Williams

Spend all of today enjoying one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon. We'll ride the 60 miles from Williams to the canyon’s south rim. You can take an optional (but highly recommended) helicopter flight over the canyon for a bird’s eye view, before riding alongside it. There's plenty of opportunities to stop at the various viewpoints. Later we'll meet for a sunset ride back to our hotel. This will truly be a day to remember!

Day 12 Williams – Kingman, AZ - 130 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 12 Williams – Kingman, AZ

Our first stop today is the small town of Seligman - for breakfast. We'll give ourselves some time for shopping at the many Route 66 shops. Afterwards we ride to Hackberry and on to Kingman, the ‘Capital of Route 66’ (self-styled!).

Day 13 Kingman – Barstow, CA - 211 miles, 5 hrs
Day 13 Kingman – Barstow, CA

We're not far into today when we hit the excitement of the ‘curviest’ part of the Route, the Oatman Highway. This is a twisty ride over the Sitgreaves Pass in the Black mountains of Mojave county. We’ll stop in one of the few remaining old west gold mining towns - Oatman - with its wild burros (donkeys!) that were left behind when the mines were abandoned. Then we'll head down to the Colorado River at Needles, California, our next historic Route 66 town. Then we'll head down to the Colorado River at Needles, California, another historic Route 66 town. Riding on we enter the dramatic, desolate and hot Mojave Desert. We’ll continue on to Amboy, located in the middle of nowhere, to check out Roy’s Motel and Café, before ending the day in Barstow.

Day 14 Barstow - Los Angeles - 140 miles, 3.5 hrs
Day 14 Barstow - Los Angeles

Our extraordinary journey comes to an end today with our ride to Los Angeles. But first we’ll pay a visit to Elmer’s eccentric Bottle Tree Ranch. Although much of the road has been lost from this point on, the end of the Mother Road, at Santa Monica Pier, is worth the wait. We’ll park our bikes, get some lunch on the pier and then go dip our toes in the Pacific Ocean. Afterwards you’ll have some time to sightsee before we finally have to say farewell to the route and return our motorcycles. Then it’s time to share stories and reflect on our adventure with our fellow participants at our Farewell Dinner.

Day 15 Depart Los Angeles Depart
Day 15 Depart Los Angeles

Time to pack our bags and head home, filled with all the experiences and memories of our adventure. We hope to see you back for another great tour. This is end of the road - for now!
