High Chaparral Guided Motorcycle Tour

All those images you’ve conjured up of the West, the pioneer spirit, Native American culture – it’s all here on this tour! See familiar scenery from scores of films, and then more spectacular, vast scenery. You’ll have to pinch yourself for a reality check! Our High Chaparral includes adventure activities too. It’s not just about great riding and great places to stay, we have allowed bags of time for you to explore and experience the natural wonders of Arizona and Utah.
Arriving in Phoenix, Arizona our adventure starts with a ride north to beautiful Sedona – an arty, vibrant little town set in a mesmerising multi-hued desert landscape. We’ll then head to one of the world’s top natural wonders – the Grand Canyon -where the optional helicopter flight is exceptional! We’ll journey on through stunning landscapes including slot canyons, Lake Powell, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon, dramatic dams and with a 4 wheel canyon adventure surprise in Page. We’ll zigzag through Capitol Reef National Park with 300m drops both sides, via the Grand Staircase (Escalante), to reach Moab, the town famed for outdoor activities. Here you’ll have ample time to live the adventure you’ve always dreamt of.
Riding on south we’ll enter the Navajo nation lands and the most spectacular vista, the iconic Monument Valley. Our amazing trip ends with a ride through Apache National Forest. Here the very special highway which will leave you breathless as you return to Scottsdale. At the end of the tour we will have visited at least five national parks and you can carry home a fully loaded bag of memories.

Total mileage: c 1700 miles

Day 1: Phoenix Arrive
Day 1: Phoenix

Enjoy walking out of the airport and into the comfortable dry warmth of the desert air! Take the complimentary shuttle to your hotel and meet your tour guides in the hotel at their welcome desk. The tour will kick off in the evening when our guides will host a welcome dinner for you and your fellow riders.

Early Birds. If you’re arriving a day or two early, we recommend you pay a visit to Taliesin West, the museum campus and home of Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s Architect. Only a few minutes away, the views alone are breathtaking, and his ideas and concepts about incorporating surrounding nature elements into architecture are extraordinary. Enjoy!

Day 2: Phoenix – Sedona - 215 miles, 5 hrs
Day 2: Phoenix – Sedona

Take a few moments to savour the amazing sunrise that signals the beginning of a new day here in Phoenix. After a good American breakfast we’ll pack our bags to go and pick up our motorcycles. After your briefing you’ll soon be in the saddle of your favourite motorcycle, off to Hwy 87 and the Tonto National Forest. Pretty much from the outset you’ll experience classic Arizona vistas from the beautiful wide sweeping roads, occasionally passing the road sign that we all love: ‘bends ahead!’

We’ll then ride up the hills and into ‘America’s Most Vertical City’ and largest ghost town - Jerome. Located between Prescott and Sedona near the top of Cleopatra Hill (1650 m), it was once known as the wickedest town in the west. Historic Jerome grew from a tented settlement to a roaring copper mining community. It’s both enchanting and a photography paradise, not having changed much in nearly 100 years.

Then we’re chasing the sunlight to awe-inspiring red rock country – Snoopy Rock, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock. The rocks appear as if on fire.

Then it’s on to uptown Sedona with its charming main street. It’s a vibrant pedestrian-friendly place that embraces the beauty of the surrounding red rocks and creates a unique experience. There’s shops and galleries to explore and you can look out over red rock country and imagine Big John Cannon and his family running their High Chaparral Ranch in the 1870s

Day 3: Sedona – Grand Canyon - 110 miles, 3 hrs
Day 3: Sedona – Grand Canyon

Before we leave Sedona we shall take a little detour on Red Rock Loop Road. We’ll stop and bask, with engines turned off, in the stunning views of Sedona and its surrounding rock formations – in total tranquillity. From Sedona we head north towards Flagstaff and then it’s just a further 60 miles till we reach one of the most enormous natural ‘Wonders of the World’, the Grand Canyon. We’ll have enough time to explore, stop at vista points and take in the incomparable views. A helicopter ride is a fabulous option too. Don’t forget your camera/mobile!

Day 4: Grand Canyon – Page - 140 miles, 3hrs
Day 4: Grand Canyon – Page

Rising early, we cruise along southern rim of the Grand Canyon to Page. This afternoon there’ll be time to take an exhilarating slot canyon excursion, a stunning boat ride on Lake Powell, a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam or a detour to Marble Canyon and Lee’s Ferry, one of the few crossing points of the Colorado river for hundreds of miles.

Day 5: Page - Zion - 155 miles, 3.5 hrs
Day 5: Page - Zion

Again we’ll make an early start as there is just so much fantastic scenery and activity on the plan for today. Glen Canyon Dam is the first stop, an amazing feat of engineering and the second largest dam on the Colorado River. Then we ride north-west to Zion National Park on a great scenic road through Kanab (one time popular movie location). We’ll spend some time in Kanab, home to many a Western movie, and then take a detour to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. This area, as the name suggests, is a shifting sea of red sand. These sand hills can move by as much as 50 feet per year and are a mecca for outdoor activities such as quad biking or horse riding. Why not have a go? Alternatively take your iron horse and ride along the bottom of the canyon to Springdale. Here you can stop at the visitor centre, catch the free Zion Park Shuttle, and venture further into the beautiful park where private vehicles are prohibited.

Day 6: Zion - Bryce - 170 miles, 4 hrs
Day 6: Zion - Bryce

We venture only a short distance from Zion to Cedar Breaks National Monument. This is a spectacular 3-mile wide natural amphitheatre that drops 2000 ft from the rim. From here we continue to Bryce and explore the magnificent Bryce Canyon with its weird hoodoos (rock pillars.) To get to Rainbow Point, the last viewing point,is about 20 miles so we allow plenty of time to tour the entire park. At Sunrise Point you can hike down into the canyon. It is a great 2 mile trail, with awesome views but care is needed as the air is pretty thin at over 9,000 ft elevation and the climb back up is fairly strenuous. And there may be time to engage in other activities like horse riding, scenic flights, mountain biking or guided ATV tours.

Day 7: Bryce - Moab - 265 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 7: Bryce - Moab

It’s a ‘big’ riding day today so enjoy the cool mountain air while you’re riding through the pine forests. We’ll follow a little creek with its sparkling, clear, mountain water. Then we’re onto Hwy 12, a rollercoaster ride - just made for motorcycles! The scenic views are breath taking as we get higher into Capitol Reef National Park. At times we’ll ride along the rim with 300 m drops on both sides. Both the riding and the scenery are truly incredible. On the top of the mountain you’re riding through pine and then birch forests before you drop down into the valley again. Then the bends become wide sweepers and the trees are replaced by bizarre rock formations. There are several sights along the way, including petroglyphs and a school house over 100 years old. We’ll sweep from left bend to right bend - all are wide and visible - but don’t get surprised by oncoming traffic. The quaint little town of Hanksville awaits for us with tasty buffalo burgers. Reflect on the last 150 miles – we bet you’ll want to go back and do it again!

In the saddle again, the road is straighter but picturesque and with very little traffic. Even the I-70 freeway we have to take for the next 30 miles is a scenic ride. Then just another 30 miles on we reach Moab, Utah’s No1 adventure city, located right on the Colorado River.

Day 8: Moab Adventure Activities Free Day
Day 8: Moab Adventure Activities

This big activity day is a free day for us to choose from a myriad of optional adventures:
1. White water rafting (several to choose from)
2. Hummer safari
3. Horseback riding
4. Slick rock mountain biking
5. Hot air balloon sunrise adventure
6. River cruise
And then there’s the extraordinary rock formations and colours of Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands. You should allow some time to explore these too.

Day 9: Moab - Chinle - 240 miles, 4 hrs
Day 9: Moab - Chinle

We hope you’ll be leaving Moab with a smile on your face and many happy memories of a fun day out. But we’ve got more planned as we make our way south to one of the most iconic places in the USA – Monument Valley. We’ll take one particular bend where the road straightens out and becomes a jawdropping single line dropping down into Navajo land. At the point the road seems to disappear between the red monuments we’ll stop for the perfect photo opportunity. Indeed you may remember the spot from the movie ‘Forest Gump’. We’ll ride closer to the monuments and after a few turns make our way up to the tribal park. Now you’re right in front of a formation that reminds you of some great John Wayne westerns and old Marlboro commercials. We’ll stop again to take some last photos – and then we’ll struggle to get back on our bikes to leave this mesmeric place. Then a little further down the road we enter Arizona again and some 95 miles later enter Chinle and the mystical Canyon de Chelly.

Day 10: Chinle - Holbrook -150 miles, 3 hrs
Day 10: Chinle - Holbrook

It’ll be an early rise as we’ll take the scenic White House Ruin Trail to several view points in the magical Canyon de Chelly. Spider Rock, is the most iconic sandstone spire that rises 240 m from the canyon floor and is visible from South Rim Drive. You are bound to have seen this in some TV adverts. Traditionally the Navajo believed that the taller of the two spires was the home of ‘spider woman’. We’ll exit the park heading south through the enormous Navajo Reservation. We’ll continue on the I-40 / Route 66 and then take the Petrified Forest Loop Drive. If we have time we’ll stop at Meteor Crater along the way.
Tonight’s resting place is an historic Route 66 town – Holbrook. This is the home of the Wigwam Motel where teepee shaped hotel rooms are actually made of solid construction material. And they’ve some pretty cool classic cars in the car park.

Day 11: Holbrook - Scottsdale - 230 miles, 4.5 hrs
Day 11: Holbrook - Scottsdale

Today we’ll take a lovely ride back to Scottsdale through Apache-Sitgreaves and Tonto National Forests and the Superstition Mountains. We’ll spend some time going to the last surviving stagecoach stop on the Apache Trail at Tortilla Flat, with its famous saloon. We’ll enjoy the tranquillity of the Apache Trail Canyon. This is the highlight of the day as it combines rugged terrain with American history and awe-inspiring formations. We then drop down to Goldfield Ghost Town, with its old gold mining museum.
It is then a suburban ride back to Scottsdale Harley-Davidson. Sadly we part company with our trusty Harleys but there’s time to relax in upmarket Scottsdale, with a great selection of bars and shops just a short walk from your hotel. Tonight we’ll have our farewell meal and swap tales of our High Chaparral adventure.
