Journalist Bruce Wilson has just published an article that caught my eye. In MSL (May 2016) he and his wife Anna test ride the 2016 Rushmore Touring models from Harley-Davidson. The unfolding of their trip is fascinating but really the Harley commentary was my main interest. In particular Anna compares and contrasts a Street Glide, an Electra Glide and a Road King – from the pillion’s perspective. All in all it makes for a good round up of what to look for in a touring motorcycle as a passenger. In our considerable experience of motorcycle tours it is often the person on the back who books our holidays. Frankly we need to keep our pillions sweet!
So for a back seat summary:
Road King has a comfy, wide seat, back rest, good leg room and space between rider and passenger. Its smaller dashboard makes it harder for the pillion to check speed and time, it doesn’t have a music system, is a bit more open to the elements, has supportive footboards but is most vibey.
Street Glide’s spacious seat slopes backwards but that’s helped by an optional backrest; footpegs transmit minimal vibration but give less stability. It’s easy to get on due to the low seat but has least legroom. The sound system is good with multiple speakers. (I’d actually say this is the ultimate touring luxury for a solo rider.)
Electra Glide’s seating is the most comfy with great armchair padded seat and it boasts an elbow rest. Seat height makes getting on and off a tad hard but makes for great views. Sound system had passenger adjustable speakers and you’re protected from the wind with the larger fairing. (I’d say this was the ultimate touring luxury for a rider and passenger.)
In concluding Bruce says of the Harleys “They had proven themselves to be the perfect tools for the job at hand, effortlessly carrying us two up in complete comfort, with all the luxuries we could have wished for.”
Come and say hi – we’re exhibiting on stand A44 at MCN London Motorcycle Show, Excel, Friday 12th Feb through to Sunday 14th Feb!
What’s more we’re offering our stand visitors a 2017 booking at 2016 prices if they book by the end of Feb!
Tip 2. Packing and our Rule of Halves.
Also in our long experience of organising tours… we have seen much overpacking. This is more of an issue with self guided tours and rentals where you are taking your belongings with you and there is only so much you can put in a bike pannier. On a guided tour your luggage travels in the support van so you can max your flight weight limit if you like! Our van should cope with that given we only have small groups of up to 15 bikes!
No matter what sort of tour we suggest that you pack light. You only need half the clothing and accessories you think you need. Use the guidance from our handy list of clothing and equipment (that comes in both your hardcopy tourbook and your Mobile Vamoos tourbook, 2 weeks before your travel). Make two piles on the bed:
Then pack only the first pile.
Job done, Simple!
And if this leaves you with a terrible fear that you’re going to run out of clothes you can always buy more of your favourite Harley-Davidson tee shirts on the go – and the dealers will love you for it too! Alternatively, on most of our tours you can hire trikes which have a massive (well relatively!) 4.4 cubic feet trunk plus a top box.
Tip 1. Get familiar with your chosen motorcycle before you travel.
In our long experience of organising tours to the USA few people ride exactly the same model of motorcycle as they own at home. You may be unfamiliar with Harleys as you ride another make of bike (we do welcome owners of all makes! ) Maybe you ride a sportster at home that just isn’t going to give you the comfort of a touring model for the touring mileages. Indeed maybe you need a larger bike because you are taking a pillion on their dream trip. If you have any concerns at all you don’t want to compound these with the obvious challenges that you will face when riding in the USA on the opposite side of the road, with some differing traffic rules.
So our advice is:
Blag a test ride or
Take a day or weekend rental from your local Harley-Davidson authorised rental dealership or
Take Orange & Black’s ‘Try before you fly’ experience. Doing this will remove a lot of the stress on the first day of your holiday, ensuring both you and hopefully your pillion and fellow travellers are more relaxed. We work in partnership with Lind Tours in the UK to offer you this opportunity. For Guided Tour customer we even offer this free. Should you want to book….Try Before you Fly Orientation Ride
